Vertical Gatefold with a Surprise Inside | Jody Morrow

Hi, everyone! It’s Jody here today, and I’m sharing a floral card that is a perfect example of why a large focal point doesn’t necessarily need a lot of other elements around it to create an interesting design.

In fact, when I’m working with a floral image this substantial, I often find that the opposite approach works best. Instead of filling the background with more color and detail, I like to build interest through texture, framing, and dimension. Those quieter elements give the focal point somewhere to shine without leaving the rest of the card feeling unfinished.

For this card, I paired a beautifully colored floral bouquet with soft pink, crisp white, touches of aqua, and delicate goldaccents. A postage-style frame gives the bouquet a visual anchor, while the subtle white-on-white texture adds detail to the background without competing for attention.

There are three design choices in particular that make this combination work, so let’s take a closer look at how they can help you balance a large focal point on your own cards.

How to re-create this card:

1. Cut a piece of white cardstock to 4.25" x 11" and score both ends at 2.75" to create a top-folding trifold card base.
   2. Dry emboss the Bloomlight Stitches Coverplate onto an A2 panel of white cardstock.
   3. Cut the embossed panel in half at 2.75" and adhere one embossed piece to the bottom half of the trifold card base.
   4. Lightly ink blend the top portion of the trifold card using a 1" blending brush and Ocean Breeze, concentrating heavier ink along the outer edges and corners.
   5. Die cut the third-largest Postage Edge Rectangle Die from white cardstock.
   6. Mask off the outer edges of the postage rectangle with removable tape, then ink blend the center with Coral Reef, fading to white in the center and concentrating deeper color along the outer edges.
   7. Adhere only the bottom half of the postage rectangle to the bottom section of the trifold card using thin foam tape.
   8. Stamp the images and sentiment with embossing ink, then heat emboss with detail gold embossing powder. Ink blend the images using the coordinating stencils:
       • Stencil 1: Ocean Breeze, Aquamarine
       • Stencil 2: Coral Reef (flowers); Ocean Breeze (bow)
       • Stencil 3: Passion Fruit (flowers); Aquamarine, Tidal Pond (bow)
       • Stencil 4: Candy Apple
       • Stencil 5: Lemon Whip
       • Stencil 6: Sage
       • Stencil 7: Eucalyptus
   9. Die cut the images and sentiment, then stack each with 1–2 blank die cuts for added sturdiness.
   10. Adhere the bouquet to the postage rectangle using thick foam tape, then adhere the sentiment directly onto the bouquet using liquid glue.
   11. Embellish the card front with Glitter Gold Drops.
   12. Adhere the two swag images to the inside of the card near the bottom to frame your message.

The biggest takeaway from this card is that more detail doesn’t always require more color. When you’re working with a large, colorful focal point, quieter design elements can often do more to enhance it than another layer of pattern or embellishment.

The postage-style frame gives the bouquet structure, the white-on-white texture keeps the background interesting, and the varying levels of dimension establish a clear hierarchy that keeps such a large floral image from overwhelming the card.

I especially love how the soft pinks and aqua play against the crisp white background, while those touches of gold add just enough elegance and shine. It’s detailed and dimensional, but the overall design still feels light and fresh.

I hope this inspires you to pull out one of your larger floral images and experiment with letting it take center stage. Try giving it a smaller frame to overlap, adding texture rather than additional background color, and varying the height of your layers. Those three simple choices can completely change the way a large focal point works on a card.
