Using Contrast to Create a Balanced Layout | Kathleen Schmelz

Using Contrast to Create a Balanced Layout | Kathleen Schmelz

Hey Pinkfresh Studio fans! It’s Kathleen again 😄, and today I’m excited to share another layout created with my Fresh Start collection.

This layout was SO much fun to put together! While we were designing the collection, I was already thinking about all the different ways I (and all of you) could use the papers and elements. The Begin Again paper was one we specifically designed with fussy cutting in mind, and I couldn’t wait to put it to use on a project like this.

The photo on this layout is actually of me working with my very first scrapbook collection with Pinkfresh Studio, The Simple Things. Documenting that memory with my second collection, Fresh Start, feels like such a full-circle moment, and it makes this layout even more special to me. 💗

Let's take a look at how you can recreate this layout:

  1. Base:
    1. Start with a 12" x 12" white cardstock and trim approx. 1/2" the top & right edges. Keep one of the off-cuts for later.
    2. Cut a 10.5" x 10.5" square out of the Keep Moving Forward paper (centered) & adhere the white cardstock on top of the resulting frame. Optional: add machine stitching around the white cardstock for added texture.
  2. Photo: Print your photo to approx. 7" x 9 3/4" & adhere it centered to the base.
  3. Ticket Border:
    1. Fussy cut a variety of elements in different colors from the Begin Again paper, including tickets, erasers, pencils, and other small motifs.
    2. Cut one of the off-cut paper strips from Step 1 to 9.5" length, then adhere the fussy-cut pieces to it, layering in pieces from the Ephemera, Layered Stickers, and Cardstock Stickers for added interest.
*Tip: Adhere the Cardstock Stickers to copy paper first, then fussy cut them to remove the stickiness and make them easier to layer.
    3. Optional: Add a line of machine-stitching for extra texture and detail.
    4. Adhere the ticket border to the left of the photo, allowing it to overlap slightly. Fluff up the tickets and embellishments to create additional dimension.
  4. Journaling: Add a column of journaling to the right of the photo.
  5. Embellishments: Add some finishing touches with Puffy Stickers, Enamel Shapes, and other embellishments.

By the way, busy elements with lots of different colors, shapes, and sizes—like this ticket border—tend to work especially well when paired with something simple and large, such as my oversized photo. If I had used several smaller photos instead, they would have competed with all the little ticket details. Mixing contrasting sizes, shapes, and colors is an easy way to create balance and keep your layout feeling cohesive.

I hope you feel inspired by this project! The best part about this idea is how easy it is to adapt. If tickets and stationery elements don't really fit your photo or theme, you can simply swap them out for other fussy-cut shapes and create the same look with a completely different feel.

Thanks for stopping by today!
