Christmas Shaker Card with a Show-Stopping Bow

When you have one element that deserves to be the star of a card, sometimes the best design decision is to simply let it be big! The gorgeous oversized bow from Merry Mistletoe immediately became the focal point for this Christmas shaker card, so I designed everything else to support it rather than compete with it.

The mostly white background gives the vibrant pink bow plenty of room to shine, while the mistletoe adds softness and just enough color behind it. Instead of filling the shaker with bold colors, I kept that layer subtle too, using a mix of soft sequins over a dry-embossed Starlit Strands background. Matte silver foil, silver cord, and Clear Drops: Ice add several different types of sparkle and shine without making the design feel busy.

It’s a great example of how scale, white space, and restrained embellishment can work together to make one dramatic focal point even more impactful. Let’s create it!

How to re-create this card:

1. Create a top-folding A2 card base from white cardstock and set it aside.
2. Dry emboss the Starlit Strands Press Plate onto an A2 panel of white cardstock and set it aside.
3. Use the largest and third-largest Single Stitch Rectangle Dies together to die cut a wide rectangular frame from white cardstock. Repeat to create a second identical frame.
4. Stack the two frames together with liquid glue to create a sturdy dimensional frame.
5. Adhere a panel of heat-resistant acetate to the back of the stacked frame using liquid glue.
6. Apply thick foam tape around the back perimeter of the frame to create a completely enclosed well for the shaker elements.
7. Add a mix of sequins in coordinating soft colors inside the shaker well.
8. Seal the shaker with the dry-embossed Starlit Strands panel, positioning the embossed side toward the shaker window so the texture is visible inside the card.
9. Adhere the completed shaker panel to the top-folding A2 card base.
10. Use the Merry Mistletoe Stencils to add color to the bow and mistletoe images:
    • Stencil 1: Coral Reef, Passion Fruit
    • Stencil 2: Passion Fruit, Candy Apple
    • Stencil 3: Fresh Pear, Sage
    • Stencil 4: Sage, Olive
    • Stencil 5: Coral Reef, Passion Fruit
    • Stencil 6: Passion Fruit, Candy Apple
    • Stencil 7: Candy Apple
11. Die cut the completed bow and mistletoe images using the coordinating dies.
12. Tie a length of silver cord around the top of the mistletoe, then adhere the mistletoe near the top of the shaker window using thick foam squares.
13. Arrange the silver cord loosely across the card front and secure it to the cardstock frame with small dabs of liquid glue.
14. Adhere the oversized bow over the top of the mistletoe using thick foam tape, allowing the long ribbon tails to extend down both sides of the arrangement.
15. Use the sentiment from the Ornamental Beauty product suite and Matte Silver Foil to create the sentiment with the coordinating press plate.
16. Die cut the sentiment, then stack it with two additional blank white die cuts for added dimension and stability.
17. Adhere the completed sentiment along the bottom of the shaker frame.
18. Finish the card with three Clear Drops: Ice for a final touch of subtle sparkle.

I absolutely love the combination of white space, dimension, and subtle sparkle on this card. The shaker adds movement, the dry-embossed background gives the window beautiful texture, and all of those small silver and clear details add just enough holiday shine.

But that oversized Merry Mistletoe bow is unquestionably the star of the show! The saturated pinks against all that crisp white give it so much impact, while the softer greens keep the overall design feeling fresh and elegant.

When you're working with an especially large or dramatic image, don't feel like you need to fill every remaining inch of the card. Give your focal point room to breathe, keep the supporting elements quieter, and let scale do some of the design work for you.
