Guest Designer | Natalie Elphinstone

We are so excited to announce Natalie as a guest designer this month, and share the amazing projects she has created for you today!! But first, how about we get to know her a little better?

I’m Natalie, and I live on the south coast of Australia. I’m married to The Trophy Husband, and I’m a mum to 4 very busy Elphie Kids. Oh, and I also work full time as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. But that still leaves plenty of time for playing with pretty paper!!

What inspired you to start paper crafting?
I started scrapbooking as a way of recording all those baby milestones after my first was born 11 years ago, and I’m still just as passionate about documenting our family memories today.

What best describes your paper crafting style?
I like to call my style ‘linear layers’ since I gravitate towards lots of layers of pretty paper… but they need to be kept in straight lines! I think that’s my left and right brain fighting for dominion! I love to add lots of bright colours to my projects, and I have trouble knowing where to stop. White space is not my strength!

What draws you to Pinkfresh Studio products?
I’ve always adored the colour combinations in each paper collection, and the clean graphic designs which make them so versatile. There’s always enough options in each collection to use for any occasion, even if it’s designed with a particular theme in mind. And now I’m also loving their innovative stamps and dies which make cardmaking a breeze!

Please list your top 5 current Pinkfresh Studio Products.

  1. Say it With Florals stamp and die set
  2. Let Your Heart Decide paper pack
  3. Puffy Alphabet Stickers (any colour!!)
  4. The Mix 2 Stitched Stars
  5. A Case of the Blahs diecuts

What is your very favorite color combo?
¾ of my papercrafting has girly themes in mind, so I love a pink-yellow-aqua colour combo.

What is one tip you have for someone just getting started in paper crafting?

I would say “just go for it!” I no longer believe in saving things for ‘later’ or for ‘something special’ – I’ve got a whole craft room of hoarded supplies that never saw a ‘later’. Cut into that full sheet of paper now, use a whole sheet of stickers, stamp wildly with all the colours, and above all…. journal your heart out!

Natalie created GORGEOUS projects for her guest design post, which you are going to just love! You can read more about Natalie's projects in her own words.

Hi there friends!

I’m so excited to be here as a Guest Designer and to share with you what I’ve been making with these gorgeous Pinkfresh products.

I have been desperate to experiment with the Say it With Florals stamp and die set ever since I first saw them. I just love how unique this idea is in the card-making world to have a die that cuts out a background panel, and the stamp set that fits precisely in the gaps to customise it however you would like. Not only does it allow you to make a card in any colour, or to suit any occasion, but it’s also quite quick and easy – so it’s great for making cards in bulk, or in a rush!!

For the first card I wanted to go with a traditional approach of using coloured inks on white cardstock just to see how all the different flowers and leaves might work together. And oh my! It turned out to be quite addicting to keep adding more and more flowers to fill out the design and I’m afraid I might have gone a little overboard! Perhaps I could have stopped a few layers ago! You can see another panel I stamped in the background of this photo with a slightly more simplistic version of the same colours – so you definitely don’t have to take it quite so far to still have huge impact!

I finished off the card by mounting it over some patterned paper from the Let Your Heart Decide 6x6” pack, and used the space to add a sentiment with Puffy Alphas.

Now that I had this stamp set all figured out, I wanted to try something a bit more technique-y and with a completely different look! I started off by cutting the panel out of dark navy cardstock and stamping all my flowers and leaves with Distress Oxide ink. I knew this ink would remain opaque on the dark cardstock but it still didn’t have quite the bright pop of colour I was after. Ultimately I stamped all the images with the lightest ink I had (Tattered Rose) which gave me a base to colour over the top of. I used my Prismacolour Pencils to add all the colours and shading, and finished off with a white gel pen to draw in the highlights.

This time I used a sticker from the Let Your Heart Decide Puffy Stickers set to finish off the sentiment, and some Nuvo drops and sequins to add a touch more dimension.

Another stamp set I was keen to try out was the whimsical designs in the Birds and Bows set. But rather than make another card I wanted to show you how easy it is to include stamps in your memory-keeping projects. This year I’ve been working on a Notebook album alongside my pocket-pages and layouts, and it’s been so fun to experiment with this different format.

I knew the long strings of balloons and bows would look great floating up the edge of the notebook but I still wasn’t brave enough to commit to it fully, so instead of stamping them directly onto my page I stamped a selection onto scrap paper and then cut them out. That allowed me the chance to play around with the arrangement before I finally stuck them down. I mixed in a few shapes from the Let Your Heart Decide Puffy Sticker sheet too.

On the other half of my notebook spread I had my photo ready to become the focal point. It just so happened that the colours of that floral paper from the Let Your Heart Decide 6x6” pack complemented it perfectly, so I let it fill the whole rest of the page. All it needed to finish it off was a little cluster of more Puffy Stickers and it was done!

Thanks for letting me join you today, I hope I’ve inspired you to go and get creative!

Xx

We asked Natalie one final question, which we think is super fun to include in her guest design post!

Do you have a past favorite project you've created with Pinkfresh Studio product that you'd like to share? Why is it your favorite?
It’s a few years old now, but I still love this layout I created with the Happy Days collection. I tried out so many new techniques on this page – printing my photo straight onto the patterned paper, trimming a fabric tag into a kite, and using the bow die with an acetate shape. But the thing I love best is the story captured and recorded so it can be remembered for years to come.

Natalie has a GIVEAWAY going on right now on Instagram! Find the post on her feed, and follow all the prompts:
